"Every villain was once an adventurer."
First Look
Hand-painted backgrounds, expressive characters, and a soundtrack that turns minor-key when you least expect it.
A Love Letter
I'm a pizza shop owner. I'm trying to make a game because games gave me a life worth living.
This is for you:
Toby Fox
Characters you care deeply about, music that sets the emotion perfectly, choices that have consequences — all lead up to a game where you are incredibly sad when you beat it and it's over. Undertale will always be one of the GOATs, and Toby forever has my gratitude.
Edmund McMillen & Florian Himsl
Every time you play it's completely different and magical. The bar.
LocalThunk
One self-driven soul can create perfection. The purest game ever made, and one I'll play 'til I die.
Atlus
A magnificent achievement in art, and emotion so raw it makes me cry (I have no shame in admitting that!).
Westwood Studios
The first game that truly captured my imagination — I was building bases out of blocks and pretending I had tesla coils shortly after.
Westwood Studios
Perfecting a brand. Truly one of the most charming games of all time.
ArenaNet
Getting lost with a group of online friends for hundreds of hours trying to formulate strategies to win the Hall of Heroes. I'll never forget those sweet memories.
Sierra On-Line
Watching my dad play and feeling the incredible sense of adventure some pixels on a screen can give you.
Blizzard
Diablo 2 made me go out into the woods with an actual axe, daydream about finding gems to slot into it, and hunt for fictional monsters. I remember LAN parties — my friend Mark hauling his whole ass PC and CRT over so we could play all night. I remember NCSSM, six hallmates on LAN, every one of us a different class. Diablo 3 caught a lot of hate early on, but man, do I have feelings about that game. It really grew on me.
Black Isle Studios & Obsidian Entertainment
The pinnacle of world building and storytelling, and proof that you can do it in any environment.
Chris Sawyer
No matter the age of the game or the genre, aesthetic and gameplay that just has that special sauce will transcend time. Nothing will ever touch Roller Coaster Tycoon's FEEL.
Sid Meier
No matter what age, from child to adult — games can transport you to another world where you can happily disappear for hours on end, and you don't feel bad about it whatsoever.
id Software
People sometimes don't understand why certain older games are beloved, but let me use Doom as an example. It's not just about graphics or gameplay. Doom was the perfect mix of everything — music, UI design, sound effects, VFX, level design, extremely unique art — and you know what? It's buttery smooth, and has been for decades. They just don't make them like Doom anymore. I could try for the rest of my life and not come close. The Doom 1/2 team are iconic.
LucasArts
My first real online experience. MSN Gaming Zone. My first clan. This was before the prequels came out, when Star Wars didn't have nearly as much lore, and I thought the graphics and FMVs were amazing. I'll always have a special place in my heart for dialing into MSN Gaming Zone in the '90s, playing my favorite game with strangers on the internet, and thinking it was so cool.
Valve
Games that blended adventure with FPS in a way that blew my mind. I really wanted to sneak around and not engage with the monsters because they were too scary (I'll admit that).
Dynamix
My most played FPS of all time, and one that will always have my heart. Base building, flying, and shooting all in one — it's every boy's dream. I long to return to that era to play it again, but it just doesn't exist anymore.
'90s Windows
Windows games in the '90s, man — there just wasn't anything like it. Simple games with pixel art that can capture hours at a time. I still listen to the Chips Challenge theme to this day.
Eul, Guinsoo, IceFrog (Warcraft III)
I played a lot of DotA on Warcraft 3 before DotA 2 — before the community got too competitive for my unskilled self. It was pure magic. Being part of the birth of MOBAs, when people weren't yelling at you, when you were excited to queue a match. I always wanted to play the INT casters: Lina Inverse, Rhasta, Lion. So many great memories. IceFrog needs to be thanked.
For close to 40 years
You've shown me the magic of games over close to 40 years. Incredible craftsmanship, branding, polish, and detail going into every one — but most importantly… gameplay that makes you want to pick up a controller every day getting home from school, immediately losing all the worries that plagued you throughout the day. I don't think a lot of us would be here without you. So thank you.
This game is my thank-you note.
